What an amazing weekend. What started off as a rocky experience turned out to be an awesome event. Craig came to me with the idea for “DidTheyPay?”, a website that allows for tenants to check whether or not their landlords are up to date on their properties. This app could truly help others. It’s become a rather unfortunate trend where landlords charge tenants a deposit, and never pay their dues to the associations. Tenants are left with an eviction notice without much help - and the landlord has already made their crazy money. DidTheyPay would help tenants by giving them the ability to check whether or not a unit at an association is current on payments and whether or not they should rent the property from the landlord.
The app was built in around 8 - 9 hours with the help of Mocha and some friends. Unfortunately in the end, we didn’t win because of some privacy issues (which we forgot to mention). I really enjoyed the experience. We didn’t go to win, we did it to participate. An incubator, free hosting and an opportunity to speak to an investor isn’t really motivation for me - I have access to all of these right now. It did bother me, however, that the truly awesome apps didn’t win. They got 3rd and 2nd place. A Yahoo! Answers type of site does not deserve 1st place. We’re almost in 2011, and investing in 1998 era websites is a bit ridiculous to me.
If you’re a developer looking to meet like-minded people around in your area, you should truly consider participating in one of these events. Not only will you learn a bit from others, but you never know who you’ll end up meeting.
